The Slytherin Common Room is located under the lake at Hogwarts and seems to have been carved into the stone. The inspiration for the common room as it is seen in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was taken from Jordan's Petra Treasury, which is carved completely from stone. In order to enter the common room, you must know the password and which wall in the dungeons to whisper it to. The password to the common room changes every two weeks and the new password is posted on the notice board. The only known password to enter the Slytherin common room was 'Pure-Blood' which is the password when Harry and Ron enter with Malfoy in The Chamber of Secrets. The location of the Slytherin common room is not known by other houses, and by knowing where the entrance is, Harry Potter almost gets himself and his friends away from the Snatchers in The Deathly Hallows. The common room is described as being a long, low room with rough stone walls and ceilings. As it is partly under the lake, the room has a slightly green tinge. The green lamps and green and black chairs give the dungeon an eerie, cold feel to it. Around the common room are lots of low backed, black and green button-tufted leather sofas as well as tables and chairs. It is also decorated with skulls and a large serpent which is above the fire place.Around the common room and on the mantle piece are other ornaments made from silver, often in serpentine designs. Like the Gryffindor Common Room, there are tapestries around the walls, but these are all mainly green and blue, with the red removed. The predominantly green and silver colouring leads to the common room feeling like it is underwater. As well as the large leather sofas and huge fire place, the room also has dark wooden cupboards and large chandeliers. There are a few paintings of famous witches and wizards from Slytherin house around the walls and since 2016, a portrait of Horace Slughorn. It was revealed on Pottermore that the giant squid often appears at the windows and sometimes more interesting creatures.
