Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Evolution and Graduation |
As in the first Mystery Dungeon, you will not be able to evolve until after the main storyline is over. Evolution takes place at Luminous Spring, however the disruptions in time have stopped anybody from being able to evolve there.

Gaining access to Luminous SpringsAfter you defeat Dialga and return to the Guild, Chatot announces that it is time for your graduation from the Guild - after this you will be able to organise your own time and you will not live at the Guild any more. However, first you must pass an exam: find the treasure at the end of Mystifying Forest. You are warned, however, that "The Grand Master of All Things Bad" lurks in the forest. Scary.
As you go out into Treasure Town to prepare, if you talk to Teddiursa and Ursaring they will tell you that they regularly go out to play in Mystifying Forest and have never come across this "Grand Master." Feeling more than a little confused, you and your partner prepare for the dungeon and set off on your exploration. Only you and your partner can take the exam - if you try to take recruits with you, your partner says they"d rather it was just the two of you.
Oh, and save before you leave. Seriously.
The dungeon isn"t very difficult. Most of the Pokémon are fairly weak. There are all sorts of Pokémon in here, but the only ones to watch out for really are:
They won"t do a lot of damage, but they will require a few hits to take them down.
After 13 floors, you reach a clearing with a very odd leafy patch in the middle. Teddiursa and Ursaring meet up with you here, saying they are going to Luminous Spring. You agree to follow them. However, when they skirt around the odd leafy patch, you and your partner walk right onto it - and fall into a pitfall trap. Clever.
The pit goes pitch black and voices around you announce themselves to be the Grand Master of All Things Bad and his minions. You and your partner are just getting scared when suddenly light is shed into the pit and you find yourself surrounded by none other than your fellow Guild members - all except Bidoof, who had accidentally removed the cover and let the light in. After a moment of confusion you have to fight these Pokémon in a mob battle:
As ever, Protect comes in very handy here. The ones to really watch out for are Wigglytuff with his Doubleslap and Sing, and Chatot with his Hyper Voice. Also, Wigglytuff, Sunflora, Chimecho and Loudred have Bodyguard, which means they will take any damage that would KO one of their allies next to them. The best thing to do really is set Protect up, put Chatot to sleep and then focus on trying to take him out - in doing so you will probably take out at least Wigglytuff first. Be warned that Wigglytuff has a stupid amount of HP and will take a long time to take down, but you can at least target it through Chatot. It"s an added bonus if Sunflora attempts to Petal Dance you while Protect is up, because all it does is confuse itself.
Once you manage to defeat them, they all skedaddle and you escape the pit, catching up to Teddiursa and Ursaring. You collect the treasure - a Perfect Apple, surprise surprise - and they lead you towards the Spring. Time is flowing normally again and so the Spring is functioning as normal. Teddiursa goes in to evolve, and you return to Treasure Town. You can now access Luminous Spring at any time without having to go through Mystifying Forest.
EvolvingIn MD2, evolution isn"t actually necessary because all evolved forms are recruitable as well. However, it may still be easier in some cases due to very low recruit rates and tough dungeons.
Evolution works a little differently than in the original games. When you go to Luminous Spring, you are given a list of all the Pokémon you have recruited who are currently able to evolve - you don"t have to enter the Spring as them, nor do they even have to be in your team of four at the time. You pick one and your Pokémon then evolves. How exciting.
There is a catch though - due to your contact with Dialga and your messing around with the future, you and your partner are not able to evolve yet. You won"t be able to until much later in the game, when you have recruited Palkia.
This doesn"t hinder you though, as none of the starters" stats are affected by evolution. A lv100 Chikorita with no Gummi boosts will have the same Attack stat as a lv100 Meganium with no Gummi boosts. On Pokémon whose stats are affected, it"s only by a tiny amount, never more than 15. Bizarrely, some Pokémon"s stats are actually lowered; Kakuna, for example, has higher stats than Beedrill. As I said, the difference is often minimal, so don"t let this stop you from getting your favourites.
Tyrogue evolves as expected, except you"ll have to feed it Gummis to alter its stats. It"s entirely random which stat will change, so I suggest saving before attempting to do it so that you don"t waste Gummis.
Wurmple"s evolution, as in the games, is random.
You don"t need a spare slot in your active team roster to get Shedinja when you evolve Nincada. It just appears in your Chimecho Assembly list.
Mantyke needs you to have recruited a Remoraid. You don"t need to have one, or Mantyke, in your active team roster.
Items and MovesIf your Pokémon requires an item to evolve - Fire Stone for example - it doesn"t need to be in your Treasure Bag, storage is fine. Note that if you give an item for evolution, it will be used up - you can"t reuse it.
Many of the evolutionary items can only be found as rewards for Rescue Missions, occassionally in Boxes or in Kecleon Stalls in dungeons such as Midnight Forest and Lost Wilderness for 1000 Poké each..
Pokémon that evolve with their usual item or move are:
New ItemsSome Pokémon normally evolve by trading. In Mystery Dungeon there is an item instead, a Link Cable. There are also new items to satisfy conditions that cannot be met in Mystery Dungeon, such as contest condition, location, trading and time of day.
