The Plot Summary

Set in the troubled era of the Great Depression, the plot focuses on three children, a widowed lawyer, a mysterious neighbor, and a couple of other vital characters.The three children include six-year-old Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout, her older brother Jem, and their common friend Dill. Scout and Jem stay with their father, Atticus, a middle-aged lawyer, in the town of Maycomb, Alabama.The children are fascinated by their mysterious neighbor, Arthur Radley, nicknamed ‘Boo’; given the hesitation of the townspeople to discuss Boo, the kids conceive innumerable imaginative stories about him.Meanwhile, a married black man, Tom Robinson, has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman, and Atticus is ordered to defend him. The townspeople oppose the decision, and Atticus is criticized as being a ‘nigger-lover’. Jem and Scout face embarrassment as well, though they defend their father’s actions.When a mob is intent on lynching Tom, the kids face them defiantly, explaining the perspectives of Tom and their father, forcing them to retreat in shame.At the trial, Atticus collects enough evidence to protect Tom, and declares that the rape victim Mayella, and her father, Bob Ewell, are lying. He explains that it was not Tom, but Mayella who initiated the sexual advances towards Tom.Despite sufficient evidence, Tom is convicted and sentenced to death, and is shot dead while trying to escape. The court’s decision damages the kids’ faith in justice and equality. Bob Ewell is shamed despite having won the case, and as an act of revenge, he attacks Atticus, Tom Robinson’s widow, and even the kids.In the scuffle that ensues, Jem breaks his arm, but before the kids could be subjected to any further harm, Boo arrives and carries them home.Bob Ewell is revealed to be dead. Sheriff Tate believes the culprit to be Boo, while Atticus believes it to be Jem. Ultimately though, he accepts that perhaps Ewell fell on his own knife.Meanwhile, Boo and Scout establish a bond, and while Scout walks him back to the Radley House, bidding him goodbye, she thinks of life from his point of view, and returns to Jem in a state of melancholy, regretting that she could never thank Boo for the incredible presents he left for them under the tree outside his pla
